Super Block Initiative to Enhance Pedestrian Experience and Reduce Carbon Emissions
Dubai: In a major move towards sustainability and urban transformation, Dubai has announced the creation of car-free zones in four key areas of the city. This initiative, known as the Super Block, aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to enhance green spaces, promote sustainability, and improve urban mobility.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai.
The initiative seeks to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists, transforming residential neighborhoods into vibrant, pedestrian-friendly environments with improved walkability, dedicated cycling lanes, and enhanced public spaces.
Four Areas to Become Pedestrian-Only Zones
The first phase of the Super Block initiative will be implemented in the following areas:
• Al Fahidi – One of Dubai’s historic districts, known for its traditional architecture and cultural heritage, Al Fahidi will be transformed into a fully pedestrian-friendly space, enhancing the visitor experience while preserving its rich history.
• Abu Hail – A bustling residential and commercial district, the car-free transformation will improve air quality and create safer streets for pedestrians.
• Al Karama – A densely populated area popular for its shops, restaurants, and vibrant street life, the initiative aims to make it a more livable and walkable urban hub.
• Al Quoz Creative Zone – Known for its artistic community and creative industries, this area will become a pedestrian-friendly space, encouraging a dynamic, car-free environment that fosters innovation and culture.
A Step Towards a Greener, More Sustainable Dubai
The Super Block initiative is part of Dubai’s broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable urban development. By limiting vehicular access and enhancing pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, the plan aims to:
• Reduce traffic congestion in residential areas
• Improve air quality by cutting vehicle emissions
• Enhance public spaces for residents and visitors
• Promote a healthier lifestyle by encouraging walking and cycling
As Dubai continues to evolve as a global city, the implementation of car-free zones represents a significant shift towards sustainable urban living. The transformation of these areas is expected to set a benchmark for future developments, making Dubai a greener, cleaner, and more pedestrian-friendly city in the years to come.
