The UAE has unveiled an ambitious AED170 billion ($46.29 billion) investment plan to transform the country’s transport and road infrastructure by 2030. The initiative aims to ease traffic congestion, enhance mobility, and support sustainable urban growth across the Emirates.
Announcing the plan during the UAE Government Annual Meetings 2025 in Abu Dhabi, Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said the comprehensive strategy will expand major roads, improve public transport, and introduce high-speed and light rail systems — all designed to improve quality of life and accommodate population and economic growth.
Massive Expansion of Federal Roads
The ministry’s roadmap targets a 73% improvement in federal road efficiency within five years. Major expansions include:
- Etihad Road: Six additional lanes (three in each direction), raising capacity by 60% to a total of 12 lanes.
- Emirates Road: Expansion to 10 lanes along its full length, cutting travel time by 45%.
- Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road: Widened to 10 lanes, boosting capacity by 45%.
- New Fourth Federal Highway: A 120 km, 12-lane route capable of handling 360,000 trips per day.
Sustainable, Smart Infrastructure
“These efforts are part of the leadership’s vision to build a smart, flexible, and sustainable transport network aligned with the UAE Centennial 2071 plan,” Al Mazrouei said.
The AED750 million Emirates Road upgrade is already underway and is expected to be completed within two years. The ministry emphasized that these developments align with the UAE’s commitment to reducing emissions, improving traffic safety, and promoting sustainable mobility.
Addressing Traffic Growth
Vehicle numbers in the UAE are rising by over 8% annually, far above the global average of 2%. The ministry will coordinate with local authorities to update traffic policies, enhance public transport integration, and introduce innovative mobility solutions to reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Rail Projects to Support Mobility
The AED50 billion UAE Railway Program, announced in 2021, remains a key pillar of the country’s transport vision. Etihad Rail is set to launch passenger services by 2026, connecting major cities and reducing congestion while ensuring safe and efficient travel.
“The ministry is committed to applying innovative technologies and smart systems to ensure smooth mobility and a better quality of life for all residents,” Al Mazrouei concluded.
