Eid al-Fitr 2025 in UAE: Crescent Moon Spotted, Holiday Dates Announced

The UAE has officially confirmed that Eid al-Fitr 2025 will begin on Sunday, March 30, following the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29. The announcement was made by the Shawwal Moon-Sighting Committee under the UAE Council for Fatwa, marking the conclusion of Ramadan and the start of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

Extended Holiday for Public and Private Sectors

Residents and citizens of the UAE will enjoy an extended break, with the Eid holiday running from March 30 to April 1 for both public and private sector employees. With the inclusion of the weekend, this provides a long and festive holiday period for the nation.

  • Federal Government: The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has confirmed the official holiday from Shawwal 1 to Shawwal 3, with work resuming on Shawwal 4.
  • Private Sector: The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced a paid holiday from March 30 to April 1 for all private sector employees across the UAE.
  • Dubai Government: The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has issued a circular stating that all government entities in Dubai will pause operations from Shawwal 1 to Shawwal 3, resuming on Shawwal 4.

AI-Powered Drones Used for Moon Sighting

In a pioneering move, the UAE Council for Fatwa deployed AI-powered drones for the second consecutive year to confirm the moon sighting. These advanced drones, launched from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory, utilized high-precision lenses and astronomical calculations to ensure accurate observation.

This innovation enhances traditional moon-sighting methods while aligning with the UAE’s commitment to technological advancements in scientific research and religious observances.

Global Observations and Challenges

The International Astronomical Center previously stated that sighting the crescent moon on March 29 would be difficult in many parts of the world, including the eastern regions of the Arab world and most of the Islamic world. However, the crescent was visible using telescopes in parts of North and Central America and with the naked eye in specific regions such as the Pacific Ocean and the western United States.

Significance of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is one of the two major Islamic holidays, marking the end of Ramadan—a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It is a time of joy and gratitude, where families and communities come together for prayers, feasts, and charitable giving.

With this year’s extended holiday and the successful implementation of advanced moon-sighting technology, the UAE continues to uphold its rich traditions while embracing modern innovations to serve its people.
