Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in strategic partnership with Emaar Properties, has announced a landmark expansion project for the iconic Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station. This transformative development aims to significantly enhance passenger capacity and experience at one of the busiest stations in the Dubai Metro network.
The project proposes a 65% increase in the station’s total area, expanding from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres. Once completed, the station’s hourly capacity will soar from 7,250 to 12,320 passengers, enabling it to serve an estimated 220,000 passengers per day.
A Response to Rising Demand
According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the expansion is a strategic response to the surging demand for metro services—particularly during peak times such as New Year’s Eve, Eid holidays, and major national events
Over the past five years, the station has witnessed a 7.5% annual growth in ridership, with over 110,000 passengers using the station on New Year’s Eve alone. This upward trend, projected to continue through 2040, underscores the importance of timely infrastructure expansion.
Enhancing Experience and Efficiency
Beyond increasing capacity, the project promises to upgrade the station’s overall commuter experience. Planned enhancements include improved passenger flow, expanded waiting areas, and upgraded facilities designed to accommodate the station’s growing footfall with ease and efficiency.
The initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader vision to create a smart, sustainable and interconnected transport ecosystem that supports the city’s dynamic growth and tourism ambitions.
